babyNamed helps you choose your baby’s name together, without influencing each other. Each of you judges names on your own, without seeing the other’s opinion; the app only shows you the names you both like.

How it works

  1. Create a list in a few questions: girl, boy or both, common or rare, short or long, origins. You can change everything later.
  2. Each of you swipes on your own: yes, no or neutral, one name at a time.
  3. You only see the other’s opinion on a name once you’ve given yours. A “no” is never announced.
  4. Your matches appear: the names you both like, to rank, and the ones that divide you, to look at again whenever you like.
  5. More than two of you? Everyone judges on their own, and a name is only shared if everyone has judged it and nobody said no.

Why blind

When two people choose together, the first one to say “I love it” sways the other, and a “no” said too quickly buries a name the other liked. Judging separately, everyone says what they really think: the agreement you reach is yours, not the quickest person’s.

Where the names come from

Please note: the catalogue of 21,197 names comes from births in France (INSEE, the French statistics office, 1986–2025), plus a few names given in Quebec, Belgium and Switzerland. Name meanings come from French sources and are shown in French.

Choose the country where your child will grow up: you then sort the names from this catalogue that are also given there, with how popular they are in that country. Names given only in your country are not in the catalogue.

Figures are available for England and Wales, Scotland, Northern Ireland, Ireland, the United States, Ontario, British Columbia, Quebec, New Zealand, Belgium, Switzerland, Austria, Sweden, Norway, Poland and Latvia. Other countries have no figures yet.

Figures, not a trendy list

Every name has its own card: births in France since 1986, trend, rank, meaning with how certain it is, other spellings, and how common it is in other countries. Rare names that are rising fast are flagged. When a meaning is uncertain, the card says so rather than making one up.

Already taken and vetoes

Your cousin’s name, your friends’ son’s name: add it to the “Already taken” list and it leaves the sorting for everyone, with all its spellings. For a name you’d rather not explain, everyone also has 5 vetoes.

Free, with an option

Free: 150 swipes to start with, then 15 a day, never blocked; the whole catalogue, search, name cards, matches and ranking, vetoes, the second parent.
